Family, friends remember 18-year-old killed on northeast Indiana coast

INDIANAPOLIS — It’s a tragic end one family didn’t expect.

“If you know something, say something. Stop protecting the people who are killing our children,” said DeAndra Dycus, executive director of Purpose for My Pain.

Family members said 18-year-old Isaac Williams, who was looking for a fresh start in Indiana, was shot and killed last weekend.

During a balloon release on the city’s northeast side, relatives said Williams had just turned 18 and moved to Indianapolis.

A distraught grandfather is seeking solace after receiving a phone call Sunday morning about his grandson, Isaac Williams.

“Every morning I get up, get on my knees and pray to the Lord to take care of my children,” Isaac’s grandfather said.

IMPD officers responded to a report of a person shot at an apartment complex on East 39th Street. When they arrived, they found 18-year-old Isaac Williams, who was deceased from his injuries.

“He was a fun-loving young man who was a little naive. He didn’t know Indianapolis,” said Teresa Brown, Isaac Williams’ aunt

Brown tells Amber that her nephew moved here from Phoenix, Arizona, when he turned 18.

“He was here trying to start his own life. He came from Arizona and wanted to do his own thing, so he got his own place. He had a job. He just wanted to start his own life,” Brown said.

“Thaddeus and Teresa are my cousins and she called me this morning crying. I asked if she was OK and she said no. My nephew was murdered,” Dycus said.

Dycus attended the vigil.

“If it wasn’t for Teresa, I wouldn’t be here. I’m tired of releasing balloons. I’m tired of parents crying,” Dycus said. “Enough is enough. We should be tired of gathering at 38th & Sherman, 38th & College and 38th & Keystone to remember children.”

“Even when you’re focused and on your path, you still have to be careful about your surroundings and the people you’re around,” said Montez Williams, Isaac Williams’ cousin.

“I didn’t expect this. It’s that simple. If you see something, say something. And those who think you won’t be affected, will be,” Brown said.

This fatal shooting remains under investigation. IMPD police did not provide any details about what happened when we contacted investigators this afternoon.
