RACINE, WI — On Friday, June 28, firefighters called to a home at 922 Elm St. in Racine rescued a 12-year-old girl from a house fire without injury.

The Racine Fire Department was dispatched to a multi-family home this evening after a 911 call reported smoke filling the home and a little girl trapped on a second-story balcony.

Upon arrival, Engine 1 firefighters located the girl and used a 24-foot ladder to reach her. The 12-year-old girl was evaluated at the scene and released to her mother without injury.

A total of 24 firefighters responded to the scene, and the Racine Police Department assisted with traffic management and fire investigation.

The Red Cross provided assistance to four tenants who were displaced from the upper and lower duplexes of the home.

Investigators determined the cause of the fire was something left in the oven that ignited while it was heating.

There were no injuries reported among residents or firefighters.

Working smoke detectors on both floors of the house alerted the tenant living above to the presence of smoke.

Estimated losses are $5,000 for damaged apartment furnishings and $1,000 for structural repairs.
