PSG midfielder a ‘serious transfer target’ for Manchester United

Manuel Ugarte is a “serious transfer target” for Manchester United this summer as the Red Devils look to bolster their midfield.

Erik ten Hag wants to sign a new defensive midfielder amid doubts over Casemiro’s future and Sofyan Amrabat’s return to Fiorentina from his loan at Old Trafford.

Ugarte is high on Manchester United’s shortlist of options, with Paris Saint-Germain ready to let the player leave after a mixed debut season following his arrival from Sporting Lisbon.

The 23-year-old has made just 21 league appearances since joining Paris for €60m last summer, yet has led Ligue 1 in tackles per game (4.67) and completed 91.2% of his passes on average, placing him in the top four per cent of midfielders in the league.

Manchester United admire Ugarte for his ball-winning skills as the club look to complement Kobbie Mainoo and Bruno Fernandes in midfield. Discussions are expected to take place, although a decision on Ugarte’s future is likely to be made by the end of Uruguay’s Copa America campaign in the United States.

Both Chelsea and Liverpool were interested in signing the midfielder last summer, with the latter club once again open to strengthening the defensive midfield position after failing to sign Moises Caicedo and Romeo Lavia last year.

Sky Germany report that Bayern Munch are not actively pursuing Ugarte, despite recent links. The Bundesliga club are focusing on agreeing a deal with Fulham midfielder Joao Palhinha.
