USA vs Uruguay Lineups: Yunus Musah replaces suspended Tim Weah, Matt Turner returns

KANSAS CITY, Mo. — U.S. men’s national team goalkeeper Matt Turner will start Monday’s deciding match America’s Cup group stage match against Uruguay.

Gio Reyna will start on the right wing, replacing the suspended Tim Weah, while Yunus Musah will play in central midfield.

Uruguay, meanwhile, remained unchanged from Thursday’s 5-0 win over Bolivia — which is exactly what U.S. coach Gregg Berhalter expected.

“In my opinion, they will play the strongest team,” Berhalter told reporters on Sunday. “I think you go into this tournament with the intention of advancing and doing the best job you can, and their job is not done either. And that’s why I’m betting they will play the strongest team.”

Turner injured his leg in a violent collision in the opening minutes of the Americans’ 2-1 loss to Panama. He was replaced at half-time by substitute Ethan Horvath, although there was still hope he would be available for Monday’s decisive match against La Celeste. Berhalter said Turner had “limited practice opportunities” on Saturday and Sunday and that the staff “will continue to monitor him.”

Uruguay currently sits atop Group C with six points, while the U.S. is second with three points, narrowly ahead of Panama on goal difference (+2 in favor of the U.S.). The Americans could advance to the quarterfinals with a win, loss, or draw, depending on what happens in the Panama-Bolivia match that will be played at the same time.
