A surprise for Akaroa volunteer firefighters

Akaroa fire brigade volunteers got a heartwarming surprise after their weekly evening training.

Rebecca and Ross Herring visited the facility with a painting commemorating firefighters who helped during last year’s massive flooding on the peninsula.

Rebecca and Ross and their two dogs were taken to the fire station after the hillside around their home and property began moving violently in the early morning hours of July 23.

After assistance was provided by the brigade, the fire station was quickly converted to allow the Herrings crew to take shelter from the storm.

Rebecca said, “I’m not good at baking, but I can paint.

“This painting is in honour of the wonderful Akaroa Fire Department who evacuated us and our two dogs when we made an urgent call for help.

“There were serious landslides on our property, which also threatened our home.

“We are deeply grateful for their incredible support and help that evening.

“Akaroa is truly fortunate to have such outstanding people who dedicate their time, courage and bravery to keeping us safe, especially when we need them most.”
