The Director of Public Prosecutions has lodged an appeal against the controversial three-year suspended sentence received by soldier Cathal Crotty for beating a woman unconscious in a random attack.

The appeal is being taken on the basis of the sentence handed down by Judge Tom O’Donnell was unduly lenient.
