Cristiano Ronaldo did not hide his tears after missing a penalty for Portugal in the match against Slovenia at Euro 2024.

Roberto Martinez’s charges had a chance to open the scoring from 11 metres after a foul by Diogo Dalot in the penalty area.

Ronaldo rose to the occasion, ready to seize his chance, having failed to score a single goal in the competition so far.

However, the Al-Nassr star’s shot, which has often stolen the headlines over the years, was brilliantly saved by Jan Oblak.

Ronaldo was devastated, absolutely devastated after being rejected.

The 39-year-old was supported by his teammates who rushed to comfort the striker.

Diogo Dalot, who played alongside Ronaldo at Manchester United, was on hand.

To make matters worse, images of the crying Al-Nassr star were shown on the big screens at the Frankfurt Arena.

BBC Radio 5 Live commentator Pat Nevin believes the penalty should not have been awarded at all.

“Ronaldo did everything he needed to do there,” he added.

“He missed a penalty. He shouldn’t have cried. Get a grip.”

Martin Keown, speaking on BBC One, expressed some sympathy for Ronaldo.

He claims the football icon carries the weight of the entire country on his shoulders, which may explain why he got the issues mixed up.

“I think he’s as professional as we know he can be to take care of the game,” he said.

Channel X fans also couldn’t believe it, with many of them believing that Ronaldo should retire after so many years of playing at the highest level.

“Ronaldo is finished, he should retire because the Cristiano we knew doesn’t miss like that,” one user wrote.

The second said: “Ronaldo, please retire. This is not how I want to remember my goat.”

A third responded by saying: “Ronaldo is finished. If he has any respect for the Portuguese national team he will retire. The man is doing the team more harm than good!!”

A fourth said: “I love Ronaldo but it’s time for him to retire from international football. He’s holding Portugal back.”
