CMPD officer commits suicide in west Charlotte, department says

CMPD officer commits suicide in west Charlotte, department says

A Charlotte-Mecklenburg police officer committed suicide Monday afternoon, the department said.

At approximately 12:30 p.m., CMPD said it was investigating an officer-involved shooting on Steele Creek Road, an area near Charlotte Douglas International Airport.

About an hour later, at about 1:45 p.m., police said one of the officers shot himself and was taken to hospital, where he died.

CMPD said there is no threat to the public at this time.

Several Channel 9 viewers reported seeing a huge police response at the scene.
