A 48-year-old Barryton woman was charged Monday with two misdemeanors in connection with a December 2021 crash in Isabella County that killed a 3-year-old boy and seriously injured his brother.

Isabella County Magistrate Aaron Miller charged Amber Jo Aragon with two counts: traffic violation resulting in death, a one-year misdemeanor; and traffic violation resulting in serious impairment of a bodily function, a 93-day misdemeanor.

Aragon is scheduled to appear at a scheduling conference on July 10 at 1:30 p.m. in Isabella County Magistrate Court and remains jailed on $25,000 bail Monday afternoon.

Aragon is accused of failing to yield at a traffic light at East Remus and South Lincoln roads in Union Township on Dec. 4, 2021, turning left onto northbound Lincoln after exiting the McDonald’s parking lot, causing a collision with Nicholas Hill, who was driving a truck westbound on Remus Road, according to the affidavit supporting the criminal complaint.

Hill, 35, has since died in another car accident but knew Isabella County Prosecutor David Barberi, who recused himself from his position; Clare County Chief Deputy Prosecutor Thomas E. Evans is prosecuting the case.

Nicholas Skaggs, 3, died in the crash and his brother, Eugene Skaggs, suffered serious injuries that required multiple surgeries that the boy is still undergoing this year, court records show.

An Isabella County Sheriff’s deputy saw the crash happen and called emergency services before helping the victims.

Several witnesses are named in the criminal complaint, including Sheriff Michael Main and several deputies and command officers, as well as Mt. Pleasant firefighters.
