Dozens of people gathered for a vigil for an 18-year-old who was killed last weekend on Indianapolis’ northeast side.

INDIANAPOLIS — Family and friends of a man who was shot and killed Sunday morning are coming together to celebrate his life.

Hours before sunset Monday evening, candles were lit and a pair of gold balloons floated at the spot where 18-year-old Isaac Williams was found shot to death in an apartment complex on 39th Street in Indianapolis.

Prayers and expressions of deep sorrow rang out at the vigil, which was attended by dozens of people.

“Isaak was just a funny, loving, goofy boy,” said Isaac’s aunt, Teresa Brown.

Friends, family and strangers gathered dressed in green and ceremoniously held up balloons of the same color. The young man’s family, like his aunt Teresa Brown, said his life was cut short just a year after he moved to Indianapolis to start a new chapter.

“He was here trying to start his own life,” Brown said. “He came from Arizona. He wanted to do his own thing, so he got an apartment. (He had) a job. (He) was just trying to start his own life.”

Isaac’s family and friends describe him as kind, loving and loyal. He was motivated like no other, they said.

“The last thing he did was read the Bible,” Isaac’s cousin, Montez Williams, said. “I was just showing that was the path he was on. I just knew him as a good kid, someone who really tried to do something different.”

Residents at The Villages at Mill Crossing told FOX59 and CBS4 they heard gunshots Saturday night. It was a neighbor who found Williams the next morning.

As police search for a suspect, Isaac’s family wants their message to reach everyone in Indianapolis. Like many families affected by gun violence, they want an end to senseless violence.

“Gun violence is going to affect everyone at some point,” Brown said. “If you think it’s not, keep thinking it’s not. If you see something, say something.”
