56 inmates in Haryana’s Karnal jail test positive for COVID-19

Karnal (Haryana) (India), May 12 (ANI): As many as 56 inmates in Haryana’s Karnal jail have tested positive for COVID-19 in the last few days.

According to Yogesh Sharma, civil surgeon in Karnal, the prisoners were kept in isolation after they tested positive for COVID-19.

“After the inmates tested positive, we have set up an isolation zone in the jail. Since it is a matter of concern, we are taking all precautions to deal with the situation,” the Civil Surgeon said.

“The rate of coronavirus cases in Karnal has improved in this safer period of Haryana than before. Fewer cases are coming in than before. But the cases in Karnal district jail are a cause for concern. In the last 3-4 days, 56 hawkers and inmates were found infected with coronavirus in Karnal jail,” he added.

According to authorities, many of the traffickers have not yet received any reports.

Meanwhile, Karnal reported 354 new COVID-19 cases while 577 people recovered and were discharged from hospital on Tuesday.

The district also recorded 12 deaths during this period. The number of active cases in the district now stands at 5,110.

Haryana reported 12,718 new COVID-19 cases and 161 deaths in the last 24 hours, the state health department said on Monday. The fresh deaths took the COVID death toll to 5,766. Meanwhile, the number of active COVID cases in Haryana stands at 1,13,232. (ANI)
