10-year-old airlifted from South Mountain in critical condition

A 10-year-old boy was rescued from South Mountain Tuesday afternoon and is in critical condition, the Phoenix Fire Department said.

Firefighters from Tempe, Phoenix and Chandler responded to South Mountain around 2 p.m. Tuesday to rescue a 10-year-old boy suffering from a possible serious heat-related medical condition, officials said.

The boy was taken from the trail by a Phoenix police helicopter, placed in an ambulance and taken to a hospital.

Authorities said initial reports indicated the boy had gone hiking with relatives.
