Tampa mother charged with murder of her 4-year-old child

TAMPA, Fla. — Tampa police say a 36-year-old mother has been charged in connection with the death of her 4-year-old son.

Arayiah Hudson told paramedics Saturday that her son, Joseph, had choked on potato chips and water. Crews arrived at the home in the 8400 block of N. 15th Street and attempted cardiopulmonary resuscitation, but the boy died.

According to a press release, officers found evidence of abuse, and a medical examination revealed injuries and internal bleeding. The examination determined that the young boy died from blunt force trauma to the head and torso.

According to a police release, authorities believe Hudson tried to cover up what happened by putting makeup on the boy’s face.

According to authorities, Arayiah Hudson has been charged with first-degree murder while engaged in child abuse in connection with the death of her 4-year-old son. (Tampa Police Department)

Hudson was arrested at her home Monday and charged with first-degree murder during aggravated child abuse. She was taken to Orient Road Jail.

Joseph Hudson’s siblings were reunited with their biological fathers, who did not live in the North 15th Street home.

“This is a heinous crime. Every child deserves to feel safe in their own home, especially with their mother,” said Chief Lee Bercaw. “The Tampa Police Department is committed to bringing Joseph to justice and keeping all children in our community safe.”
