An Indianapolis Police Department Public Safety officer recently responded to a report of animals in a hot car and found his best friend.

Public Safety Officer Poe and other officers were called to the InTown Suites Motel at approximately 6:00 p.m. on June 20.

According to WISH, three animals were found in the hot car: a German Shepherd, a pit bull and a cat.

Officials say the German shepherd was honking to draw attention to her plight. The pit bull, who was chained to the floor, was dead.

The pit bull was dead. The cat and German shepherd recovered from heat injuries at a local vet.

A 53-year-old man and a 74-year-old woman were arrested for animal cruelty. They said they left the animals in the vehicle because the motel did not allow pets.

Public Safety Officer Poe adopted a German Shepherd after the dog recovered.

“I changed her collar and Abby felt like she was home for good,” Poe said in an IMPD statement on Facebook.
