UF cancels classes on July 5, giving students a 4-day Independence Day weekend

This will allow Gators players to spend more time with family and friends.

University of Florida (UF) gives students an extra day off for the Fourth of July holiday.

Classes are canceled by default on July 4, which falls on a Thursday this year. But UF President Ben Sasse announced that Friday, July 5, will also be a day off so that students can take advantage of the four-day weekend.

“We want the Gators to enjoy an extra day celebrating the freedom of our country,” Sasse said. in a prepared statement announcing the move. “More family time, more barbecues, and more fireworks. Take care of yourselves.”

Some UF facilities will continue to operate on July 5. “UF Health and its hospitals, clinics and physician offices will remain open throughout the state,” UF said in a statement announcing the decision.

The move aligns UF’s holiday schedule with the state’s. Gov. Ron DeSantis also announced that state offices will be closed on July 5giving government workers an extra day off.

“We encourage UF departments to schedule an additional day of closure now,” UF said in a statement announcing the decision.

“Please note that the July 4th holiday falls at the end of the pay cycle and all time and vacation up to that date must be entered and approved before the holiday. Vacation time will be granted at the close of business on July 5th during the next pay cycle.”
