Boy Suffering From Heat-Related Illness Dies After Rescue While Hiking on South Mountain

A 10-year-old boy died Tuesday after suffering a “heat-related emergency” while hiking with his family on South Mountain, Phoenix police said.

Detectives are investigating the death, which occurred after officers were called just before 3 p.m. July 2 to South Mountain Park and Preserve to assist an injured hiker.

The boy was airlifted in an ambulance and taken to hospital in critical condition. He later died of heat-related complications, police said in a statement.
