2 arrested after robbery near northern part of city that led to shooting

INDIANAPOLIS — Two people have been arrested after an alleged robbery ended in a shooting on Indianapolis’ north side early Tuesday morning.

According to the Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department, detectives with the Aggravated Assault Unit arrested 20-year-old David Tillman and his 17-year-old accomplice in connection with a reported assault/shooting.

Just after 12:40 a.m. Tuesday, officers from the department’s northern district responded to a report of a person shot in the 1600 block of College Avenue. When police arrived, they found a man on the side of the road with apparent gunshot wounds. The man was taken to a local hospital in serious but stable condition.

Following the shooting, officers received a description of the suspects from witnesses at the scene. That description was then relayed over the radio to other officers in the area.

The release said detectives were able to view surveillance footage of the incident, which reportedly shows the suspect “forcibly removing the firearm from the victim’s pocket.” The victim then attempted to retrieve the firearm, and a struggle reportedly ensued when the second suspect jumped in. After the suspects took control of the firearm, the victim was reportedly shot.

During the investigation, police learned that the suspects were possibly spotted nearby entering an apartment building. The release said officers later identified them as suspects after they briefly opened the door to the apartment. Detectives obtained a search warrant for the apartment, and two suspects, identified as Tillman and a 17-year-old, were arrested.

Officials said a search of the apartment uncovered the clothing both men were wearing in video footage of the incident, as well as a handgun and “several individually wrapped bags of narcotics.”

Tillman was arrested on preliminary charges of robbery and aggravated assault, as well as two active warrants in Marion County for probation violations. The release said a 17-year-old was also arrested.
