3-year-old boy shot in hand

SANFORD, Maine — Police are investigating after a 3-year-old boy was shot in the hand during an incident at his home Tuesday afternoon.

Police said they were called to 13 Shaw Road around 4:28 p.m. by a neighbor who heard the sound of a gunshot. When officers and paramedics arrived, they found the boy with a gunshot wound to his left hand. Police said the boy was with his father.

The child, police said, was taken to Maine Medical Center, where he is being treated for his injury.

Police said the gun was found inside the home.

Maj. Matthew Gagné said the department’s Criminal Investigation Division is on scene and investigating the incident.

“This case is still in the early stages of the investigation and the public is not at any risk,” Mr. Gagné said in a statement.
