Xbox Live back online after ‘major outage’

Xbox Live is back online. After an outage that knocked out the gaming service for several hours Tuesday, Microsoft’s gaming platform is back online. In a tweet posted to X on Tuesday evening, the company confirmed the issues had been resolved.

While the service was down, players were unable to sign in to their profiles, preventing them from playing games on their consoles. According to Microsoft’s Xbox Status support page, the “major outage” was first reported around 2:07 p.m. ET. “You may be unable to sign in to your Xbox profile, be disconnected while signed in, or experience other related issues. Features that require you to sign in, such as most games, apps, and social activities, will not be available,” the message accompanying the issue read.

Because users were unable to log in, even games downloaded locally to their Xbox consoles failed to launch.

It’s still unclear what caused the issue. When contacted for comment, an Xbox spokesperson referred CNET to the Xbox Support account on X, which has been tweeting similar updates.

Users were quick to express their outrage over the situation, with “Xbox” becoming the most popular topic on X in the United States.
