Trump silence verdict delayed after Supreme Court grants former president sweeping immunity: Live Updates

Trump silence verdict delayed after Supreme Court grants former president sweeping immunity: Live Updates

President Joe Biden addresses nation following Supreme Court ruling

Donald Trump’s request for a stay of sentencing in his bribery trial has been granted after the Supreme Court ruled that the former president has “absolute” immunity from criminal prosecution for his “official” actions as president.

The verdict is to be announced on September 18.

Joe Biden slammed the Supreme Court ruling during an address to the nation from the White House on Monday evening, saying it sets a “dangerous precedent.”

The 6-3 majority decision was dissented by all three liberal justices on the panel, with Sonia Sotomayor warning in her dissenting opinion: “The president is now a king above the law.”

Biden is still struggling to appease Democrats after his dismal debate performance last week, with concerns rife within the party about his chances of winning and his influence on lower-tier candidates.

New polls paint a grim picture, showing Biden’s support has fallen by as much as 10% in key battleground states he won in 2020, and 75% of registered voters believe the party would do better without him on the ticket.

The president’s potential successors — Kamala Harris, Pete Buttigieg, Gretchen Whitmer and Gavin Newsom — are all doing much better in the polls. There’s no sign Biden will back down.

New Poll: Most Voters Think Democratic Party Has a Better Chance in 2024 Without Biden

New CNN/SSRS poll shows that a majority of U.S. voters believe the Democratic Party would have a better chance of retaining the presidency in 2024 if President Joe Biden were not at the top of the ticket.

In the network’s first poll since Biden’s disastrous debate performance, the president’s approval rating hit a new low of 36 percent, with 45 percent of those surveyed saying they strongly disapproved of his performance.

Nationwide, 49% of voters support Donald Trump, while 43% support Biden — although that result is unchanged from the last poll in April.

Kamala Harris is faring better against Trump in a head-to-head race, with the former president winning 47 percent of registered voters and the vice president 45 percent. Harris has more support among women and independents than Biden, according to the poll.

Other Democrats mentioned as potential successors to Biden have similar levels of support for the president, with Trump leading. They include California Gov. Gavin Newsom (48-43 percent), Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg (47-43 percent) and Michigan Gov. Gretchen Whitmer (47-42 percent).

A majority of Democrats and Democratic-leaning registered voters (56%) believe the party has a better chance of winning the presidency if someone other than Biden runs, while 43% believe the party has a better chance if he does.

When all registered voters are taken into account, 75 percent believe the party would do better without Biden at the top of the ticket.
