Fire reported in Everett MA on Hancock Street – NBC Boston

Firefighters responded to a fire in Everett, Massachusetts on Wednesday morning.

The fire was reported around 8 a.m. at a three-story building at Hancock and Tappan streets. When firefighters arrived, heavy smoke was billowing from the building.

A firefighter rescued a 3-year-old girl from the third floor of a building. The child was taken to Boston Children’s Hospital, and the firefighter was transported to an area hospital. Both are expected to be OK.

Firefighters said a mayday was initially called but was soon canceled when a firefighter managed to exit the building with the child.

The first to notice the smoke were two Everett public works employees who called the fire department, then ran into the building, helped evacuate residents and informed firefighters about a child on the third floor.

Aerial photos showed about a half-dozen fire and rescue vehicles at the scene. Several firefighters were on the roof of the building.

Firefighters were still at the scene Wednesday morning, putting out hot spots. The cause of the fire remains under investigation, although firefighters said they do not believe it was started suspiciously.
