DVIDS – News – Michigan Cyber Security Officer Swears In Twin Brother as Newest Cyber Operations Specialist

Warrant Officer Trenton Darrow, 170A Cyber Warfare Technician with the Michigan Army National Guard, took the opportunity to administer the Oath of Military to his twin brother, Spc. Travis Darrow, at the Lansing Military Entrance Processing Station (MEPS), swearing him into the Michigan Army National Guard. Travis will be a 17C Cyber Operations Specialist with the 172nd Cyber Protection Team.

In 2010, Trenton joined the Michigan Army National Guard as an 11B Infantryman in the 125th Infantry Regiment. In 2015, he volunteered to deploy to Jordan as a crew member of the 13M Multiple Launch Rocket System (MLRS). During this time, he enrolled at the Army Signal University at Camp Arifjan in Kuwait, earning several Network and Security certifications. After returning home, Trenton completed an internship with Veteran Affairs in Saginaw, Michigan. By 2018, he had transitioned to the Defensive Cyber Operations Element (DCOE) at Joint Force Headquarters. He then completed Warrant Officer Candidate School in 2023, while also earning certifications such as Offensive Security Certified Professional (OSCP) and GIAC Certified Forensic Analyst (GCFA).

“I had no qualms about sponsoring my brother to join the unit,” Trenton said. “Between the immense opportunities that a 17-series cybersecurity career provides Soldiers in the civilian workforce and the way the cybersecurity team treats Soldiers like family, I knew my brother would be treated like a professional, gain critical job skills and network with other like-minded cybersecurity professionals.”

The officer in charge of the 172nd Cyber Protection Team, Lt. Col. Kathleen Prince-Sayward, was thrilled to hear about Private Darrow joining the team. “Our bonds of service often create a sense of family, and this takes that to the next level,” said Prince-Sayward. “Working with highly specialized Soldiers on a daily basis strengthens the bonds of the team even more. Soldiers work through adversity and find solace in their military family, and having siblings on the team demonstrates the family values in our community.”

The Darrow brothers grew up in Indian River, near Gaylord, Michigan. “Travis and I grew up as best friends and have a close relationship. It was an honor for my family to continue to share this intimate moment together,” Trenton said. The Darrow family shares a military bond with his older brother, Brandon, who served in the Army as a corrections specialist with 31E. Trenton’s wife, Hillary, is a captain who served in the Army as a family medicine and obstetrician at Ft. Eisenhower, Georgia. In an extraordinary display of family commitment and dedication to duty, Warrant Officer Trenton Darrow’s enlistment of his twin brother, Private Travis Darrow, in the Michigan Army National Guard exemplifies the deep bonds and shared sense of duty that unite military families. This rare event not only underscores the deep-rooted loyalty within their family, but also highlights the opportunities and camaraderie found in the military community. As both Soldiers begin their tours of duty with the 172nd Cyber Protection Team, their journey together symbolizes the enduring spirit of service and solidarity that defines their military heritage.
