A 34-year-old District of Columbia man spent 18 days in an Alexandria jail without bail after allegedly driving a friend to the jail in a stolen car that had an illegal firearm inside.

On June 3, the Alexandria Police Department used GPS to locate a red Ford Mustang with North Carolina license plates parked near the main gate of the William G. Truesdale Adult Detention Center (2001 Mill Road), according to a recently released search warrant affidavit.

Police arrested a man standing in the back of the vehicle and discovered he was a convicted felon. A passenger in the car told police he was being taken to the jail to check in with his pretrial detention officer on strangulation and assault and battery charges and did not know the car was stolen, according to a search warrant affidavit.

District Attorney Bryan Porter said his office determined there was insufficient evidence to pursue criminal charges and decided to close the investigation.

“The case is still under investigation and we may be able to reopen it in the future,” Porter said.
