On Monday, the Vicksburg Police Department (VPD) officially promoted its newest sergeant and swore in two new positions.

Hunter Anderson and Edward Knight took their oath as new officers.

“We are here today because we believe in the Vicksburg Police Department,” said Mayor George Flaggs Jr. “We believe that you are doing what you need to do; that you are doing a phenomenal job.”

During a ceremony Monday, the VPD officially promoted Officer Dewayne Powers to the rank of sergeant.

“This is a well-deserved promotion for this young man,” said Police Chief Penny Jones.

Jones said Powers, through his distinguished record as an officer and calm demeanor, has become a reliable force for good among VPD personnel.

“He could be so happy and you would never know it,” Jones joked. “That’s probably the most emotional we’ve ever seen him.”
