Third person arrested in funeral home investigation

Officers investigating a Hull-based funeral home have made a third arrest as part of a previously planned operation.

A 54-year-old woman has been arrested on money laundering charges.

A 46-year-old man arrested earlier this year has also been arrested on suspicion of theft and manufacturing or supplying articles for use in fraud. A 23-year-old woman remains free on bail.

In March, Humberside Police removed 35 bodies and a quantity of ashes from Legacy Independent Funeral Directors following reports of “concerns over the care of the deceased”.

Deputy Chief Constable Thom McLoughlin described the investigation as “extremely complex” and “delicate” following the latest arrest.

He added: “We continue to follow all lines of inquiry and seek answers for the families of victims and those affected.

“As we enter the fourth month since the first report, we continue to put families, friends and all those affected by the disaster at the heart of everything we do.

“We are committed to working with our partners to ensure they get the help and support they need.”

A 46-year-old man and a 23-year-old woman were arrested in March on charges of preventing a lawful and dignified burial, fraud by providing false information and fraud by abuse of office.

So far, no one has been charged during the investigation.

Detectives revealed on Monday they had identified 163 families linked to ashes found at a funeral home on Hessle Road.
