UPDATE: Murder suspect charged only with firearms violations told mother ‘Some guy put a gun in my face. I did what I had to do, mom’

FARGO, N.D. (KVRR/KFGO UPDATE 8:00 p.m.) — Court documents reveal details of a shooting in Fargo that left one man dead.

Fargo police were called to the Arbors apartment complex in the 2200 block of 6th Ave S around 10:15 p.m. on June 24. Officers found Zion Brooks, 20, in the parking lot with a serious facial wound. Court documents say Brooks’ wound indicated he had been shot at close range.

Brooks’ girlfriend told police she believed 20-year-old Amire Logan shot her boyfriend because he was the only person who “had a problem” with Brooks.

Two witnesses said Brooks came out of a yard near the apartments toward Logan. They told police Brooks had a gun and approached Logan, yelling at him. Both witnesses heard a shot but did not see Logan shoot Brooks.

A 9mm pistol was found underneath Brooks. A .45 caliber shell casing was found nearby.

Officers discovered a silver SUV, later identified as a Hyundai Sonata, and an orange Jeep had quickly left the parking lot after the shooting. The investigation revealed that the Hyundai was owned by Logan and that the Jeep was occupied by witnesses. Investigators were able to contact the witnesses.

Detectives learned that Logan called his mother about an hour after the shooting and said, “Some guy put a gun in my face. I did what I had to do, mom. I shot him back. I’m so sorry. I’m so sorry. I love you,” and then hung up.

Investigators spoke with Logan’s family the day after the shooting. They had not heard from Logan, but they turned over a rifle they believed belonged to Logan. The rifle is a ghost gun, meaning it is not registered and has no serial number.

Fargo police and the High Plains Fugitive Task Force located and arrested Logan on June 26, two days after the shooting. He was arrested for murder.

Today, the Cass County District Attorney’s Office announced that it has reviewed all available evidence and charged Logan with two counts of possession of a firearm.

Logan was convicted in February 2023 in Clay County of carrying a pistol without a permit, a felony.

Logan’s first court appearance will be tomorrow.

FARGO, N.D. (KVRR) — The man who was arrested for the murder of Zion Brooks last week in The Arbors in south Fargo has not been charged with the crime.

The Cass County State’s Attorney’s Office charged 20-year-old J’Veonte “Amire” Logan with two counts of unlawful possession of a firearm, a class C felony.

They say the charges are based on currently available evidence and that the investigation into Brooks’ death is still ongoing.

On Monday evening, police were called to The Arbors for a report of a man shot in the face.

The 24-year-old was taken to hospital, where he died.

Police believe Brooks and Logan knew each other.
