OnePlus May Soon Automatically Limit Battery Level to 80% to Slow Battery Aging (Update)

Ryan Haines/Android Authority

In short

  • OnePlus is working on a new battery health check feature that will automatically enable battery charging protection if your device is charged for too long.
  • In the latest Android 15 beta update for OnePlus devices, we spotted code related to a feature currently in development.
  • This feature is designed to slow down battery consumption when users charge their devices for extended periods of time.

Update July 2, 2024 (11:00 PM EST): The original version of this article incorrectly focused on the battery charge limit as a new feature. However, this is nothing new, as users can already manually toggle the charge limit according to their needs. The new, upcoming feature is that this 80% battery charge limit will automatically turn on (without user interaction) if the device is charged for too long. The error is regretted, and the article has been updated to correctly reflect this change.

OnePlus is working on a new battery health feature that could roll out to users with the Android 15 update. The feature will automatically limit charging to 80% when the device is charged for an extended period of time.

Some APK Demolition helps predict features that might appear in the service in the future based on code in the works. However, it is possible that such predicted features will not be released publicly.

Code spotted in OnePlus’ second Android 15 beta (source: 1NormalUsername on X, formerly Twitter) hints at upcoming changes to Oxygen OS’s “Charging Limit” feature.

Currently, in Oxygen OS 14, users can limit their device to 80% battery charging to try to slow down battery aging. In a future version of Oxygen OS, likely Oxygen OS 15, OnePlus devices will automatically limit themselves to 80% battery charging if they’re left plugged in for too long. No user interaction will be required.

Below is information explaining how this feature may work once released:

Code

<string name="regular_charge_protect_open_alert_content">Your device has been charging for too long. To avoid damage to the battery, \"Charging limit\" has been turned on.</string>
<string name="regular_charge_protection_content">To slow down battery aging, the battery level will always be kept at 80% while charging. This feature will automatically turn on when your device has been charging for too long.</string>
<string name="regular_charge_protection_notification_content">To slow down battery aging, the battery level will always be kept at 80% while charging.</string>

It’s important to note that the upcoming feature is not the same as the Optimized Charging feature that currently exists on OnePlus devices. While Optimized Charging caps the battery at 80%, it anticipates user behavior and tops up the remaining battery 100 minutes before the user unplugs the device.

Charging Limit, on the other hand, will always keep the battery at 80% while charging, making it more useful for those who keep their phones constantly plugged into a charger. Users currently have a toggle for this feature, but in the future, the phone could also make this decision on its own.
