Turkish Orkun Kokcu out of Euro 2024 quarter-finals due to suspension

Turkey midfielder Orkun Kokcu will miss his side’s European Championship quarter-final against the Netherlands due to suspension.

The 23-year-old midfielder received a yellow card in the 11th minute of his team’s 2-1 last-16 win over Austria on Tuesday for a foul on Christoph Baumgartner, having previously received a yellow card in his country’s 2-1 group-stage win over the Czech Republic.

Yellow cards are only erased after the quarter-finals of the competition, meaning any player who receives two yellow cards within the first five matches of the tournament will be suspended for one match.

Turkey were forced to sit out playmaker Hakan Calhanoglu and defender Samet Akaydin in the last 16 due to suspension, but both will now return for Saturday’s quarter-final clash with the Netherlands in Berlin.

Benfica midfielder Kokcu has scored two goals in 32 international appearances for Turkey, and has featured in all four of his side’s Euro 2024 matches.

Kokcu was substituted in the 86th minute of the win over Austria, being replaced by Fenerbahçe attacking midfielder Irfan Kahveci.
