INDIANAPOLIS — There was an officer-involved shooting on the city’s west side.

According to IMPD, just after 11:35 p.m., officers with the department were involved in a shooting in the 5100 block of W. Vermont Street. That is near Thatcher Park.

Officers responded to the scene after a call about a person shot. Upon arrival, officers encountered the man who made the call in the backyard of a home.

Police said the man was holding a firearm and displaying it. After more than 16 orders from officers on the scene to put their weapons down, two IMPD officers fired their service weapons, according to police.

According to police, no officers were injured in the shooting.

During a press conference, IMPD said the person shot by officers was transported to a local hospital in critical condition.

At the home, IMPD says they found a note that stated the suspect planned to commit suicide. The suspect told medics he shot himself multiple times and wanted to die.

No officers or bystanders were injured in the incident.

During a second press conference, IMPD said it had not yet been determined whether the man committed suicide or was shot by an officer.

The officers involved are on administrative leave, as is customary in officer-involved shootings. They were wearing body cameras at the time of the incident.
