Detective Jashwinder Jas Singh, 48, of Bradford District, appeared at Sheffield Magistrates Court on Tuesday (July 2) where he was sentenced to four months in prison, suspended for 20 months. The terms of the suspended sentence are that he must complete up to 20 rehabilitation activity days and 60 hours of unpaid work.

The charges relate to multiple breaches of a restraining order between February 2023 and February 2024. All breaches occurred while Det Con Singh was off duty.

Detective Chief Inspector Nicola Bryar, head of West Yorkshire Police’s Professional Standards Directorate, said: “Detective Con Singh was advised of the terms of this civil order, which included not communicating directly with the victim and not going beyond her home address.

“He has repeatedly engaged in conduct that contravenes this order, including committing offences, while under investigation by the Professional Standards Directorate.

“This pattern of behaviour is completely unacceptable and understandably has caused the victim considerable distress. I hope this case demonstrates to victims that we will pursue police perpetrators and bring them to justice.

“Detective Con Singh is currently suspended from duty and will be subject to misconduct proceedings.”

Another West Yorkshire Police detective is to appear in court on charges of abuse of office.

Detective Constable Wasim Bashir, 54, is accused of contacting vulnerable victims of serious sexual offences or domestic violence while on duty between August 1, 2019, and January 5, 2022, without any specific police purpose.

He is also accused of having sexual relations with one of the victims.

In line with the recommendations of the Independent Office for Police Conduct

The allegations were investigated by West Yorkshire Bribery and Detective Inspection, operating under the direction and supervision of the Independent Office for Police Conduct.

Following the completion of the investigation in October 2023, the case files were transferred to the General Prosecutor’s Office, which approved the filing of charges.

Bashir is due to appear at Hull District Court on Wednesday (July 3).

West Yorkshire Police said the man had been suspended from duty following his arrest.
