Driver, 78, charged with killing family at San Francisco bus stop West Portal charged with vehicular homicide, district attorney says

SAN FRANCISCO (KGO) — A driver accused of killing a family in San Francisco’s West Portal neighborhood in March has been charged with vehicular manslaughter, District Attorney Brooke Jenkins announced at a news conference Tuesday.

A family of four died in the accident in March, and the 78-year-old driver will be charged with four counts of road rage manslaughter.

The victims were identified as: 40-year-old Diego Cardoso de Oliveira, 38-year-old Matilde Ramos Pinto, their 1-year-old son Joaquin Ramos Pinto de Oliveira and 3-month-old Caue Ramos Pinto de Oliveira.

The SFMTA report found the driver was driving on the wrong side of the road and exceeding the speed limit.

District Attorney Brooke Jenkins says the initial investigation does not indicate the driver was under the influence of drugs, alcohol or was suffering from any medical condition.

The vehicle was also found to be fully operational.

“We have evidence that the vehicle was travelling at an excessive speed, well in excess of the speed limit,” DA Brooke Jenkins said. “This is not someone speeding by a couple of miles, this was excessive speed and driving in a manner that was not safe and could reasonably and foreseeably have caused death.”

The driver has not been detained at this time, but authorities are said to be working with her lawyers.

The incident led to proposals for changes to traffic management in the area, but these have been put on hold.
