Former Jharkhand Chief Minister Hemant Soren is reportedly set to return to office after being released from jail where he was lodged in connection with an alleged land scam, sources said.

According to sources in the INDI alliance, MPs and leaders have reached an agreement to reinstate him.

Soren, who spent five months in Birsa Munda Central Jail before he was granted bail in the Jharkhand High Court on June 28 in connection with a money laundering case, is likely to replace Champai Soren, who is scheduled to resign by 8 pm today.

The decision was taken during a meeting at the prime minister’s residence in Ranchi, which was attended by, among others, Jharkhand Congress representative Ghulam Ahmad Mir, state president Rajesh Thakur and Hemant Soren’s relatives – Basant and Kalpana.

If appointed, it will mark Hemant Soren’s third term as chief minister of Jharkhand, a state created in 2000 after seceding from Bihar.

According to reports, discussions are also underway to give Champai Soren new responsibilities, potentially as chairman of the UPA coordination committee and working president of the JMM.

In response to the developments, BJP MP Nishikant Dubey tweeted, “The Champai Soren era in Jharkhand is over.” He slammed the JMM, describing it as a family-oriented party and urging the outgoing chief minister to follow in the footsteps of Bhagwan Birsa Munda and tackle alleged corruption under Hemant Soren’s leadership.

Champai Soren, 67, a longtime associate of JMM founder Shibu Soren, has played an important role in the party leadership for decades.
