Firefighters rescued a girl from a fire in Everett after passing DPW workers noticed smoke and began banging on residents’ doors.

During the mayday, firefighters rescued a toddler on the third floor and took him to a nearby ambulance — which took him to a hospital in Boston. One firefighter was also injured in the blaze and was expected to be OK.

Just before 8 a.m. Wednesday, the Everett Fire Department’s 911 center began receiving multiple calls about smoke coming from the roof of a home at the corner of Hancock and Tappan streets. DPW workers driving down the street spotted the smoke at 140 Hancock St. and alerted residents by knocking on doors.

Everett firefighters soon arrived on the scene and sounded a second fire alarm.

“As the fire began to spread from the top floor, crews quickly entered the 3rd floor and a MAYDAY alert was declared,” Everett Fire wrote.

Firefighters managed to save the girl on the third floor during a mayday signal.

“The Mayday was canceled a short time later, and all firefighters were accounted for and found safe,” Everett Fire wrote, adding, “The fire was contained to that one home, and an ‘All-Out’ was declared just before 12:00 p.m..”
