Firefighters battle apartment complex fire in Las Vegas

Clark County firefighters respond to a fire at an apartment complex in the 1000 block of Dumont Boulevard on Wednesday, July 3, 2024.

Clark County firefighters battle a fire that engulfed 12 apartments Wednesday afternoon. Officials initially believed the blaze was caused by a gas leak.

The fire department received a report of a residential fire just after 2:30 p.m. and responded to the 1000 block of Dumont Road, where multiple structures were currently ablaze. The blaze, which required two alarms, was severe enough that flames could be seen coming through the roof, Deputy Fire Chief Brian O’Neal said in a statement Wednesday.

O’Neal said the buildings affected by the fire had structural flaws that made them more susceptible to fire, including voids in the building’s walls.

More than 70 people and 10 fire trucks were dispatched to the blaze. Firefighters were seen removing at least one animal from the building just after 3:30 p.m., and O’Neal said there was one unconfirmed report of smoke inhalation.

Several residents of the complex and surrounding apartments were evacuated and placed in temporary shelters, officials said.

As of 3:45 p.m., the fire was still not under control because the roof and voids in the structure made extinguishing difficult, O’Neal said.

Road closures are expected in the area while firefighters continue to extinguish the fire and investigate its cause, officials said.

This is an ongoing story that will be updated.
