An Elizabethton man donated several new, positive books to the Carter County Jail on Monday.

Louis Greene delivered the books, which he purchased at a Barnes & Noble store in Johnson City, to Carter County Sheriff’s Office Lieutenant Barbara Scalf and Sergeant Will Vinson.

“A little self-help can go a long way,” Greene said.

Greene donated study Bibles, self-help books by Dale Carnegie and Napoleon Hill. He said his favorite was “Think and Grow Rich” by Hill, a Southwest Virginia author.

“When I was younger, I read advice books,” Greene said.

He believed that donating some of his favorite books to the prison might help the inmates.

In total, he donated 24 books to the prison. Vinson said the books would be given to prisoners.

The prison has a plastic prison trolley that is wheeled around the prison to deliver books to prisoners. Prisoners can then select books and return them.

“He goes to different parts of the prison every day,” said Vinson, who said he also sets aside study Bibles for those who ask for them. He said he gets such requests often.

Vinson and Scalf, who serves as deputy administrator at the prison, said the facility welcomes donations of books.
