Woman accused of horrific child abuse

A woman has been charged with attempted murder after she allegedly intentionally hit a road sign that was carrying five people.

The 32-year-old woman was driving a Nissan X-Trail on the Kennedy Highway near Atherton, Tablelands in the early hours of June 26 when she allegedly deliberately drove off the road and hit a sign, overturning the vehicle.

There was a 43-year-old man and four children in the car, aged between three months and nine years.

It is further alleged that one of the children was in the trunk of the car at the time of the incident and was not properly secured.

No one was seriously injured and the group left the scene.

Police only learned about the abandoned vehicle several hours later when a passer-by spotted it on the side of the road in daylight.

The following day, June 27, police were called to a home in Evelyn at approximately 12:30 p.m. to reports that a three-month-old girl and a two-year-old girl had sustained non-life-threatening injuries.

A scene was secured at the crime scene and the children were taken to Cairns Hospital for treatment.

Police will claim that the woman attacked two children.

She was charged with numerous offences, including five counts of attempted murder (domestic violence offence), as well as assault occasioning bodily harm while armed (domestic violence), assault occasioning bodily harm (domestic violence), disqualification from driving and operating a motor vehicle as a passenger not designed to carry passengers.

She is expected to appear in the Cairns District Court on July 4.
