IREDELL COUNTY, North Carolina (NEWS FROM THE QUEEN’S CITY) — A Statesville mother was arrested after her 2-year-old son overdosed and was given Narcan at a hospital, authorities said.

The baby was brought to the emergency room on Monday, July 1, by his mother, Brittany Dawn Riley, after she found him unresponsive, according to the Iredell County Sheriff’s Office.

Hospital staff determined the boy had overdosed and administered Narcan. The 2-year-old was stabilized and taken to Brenner Children’s Hospital in Winston-Salem for further observation, where he is expected to make a full recovery.

Riley admitted to investigators that she had used fentanyl and methamphetamine at home earlier that day. She was arrested and charged with child abuse.

Riley is being held on $100,000 bail. The Department of Social Services has been notified and will continue to investigate the situation, the sheriff’s office said.
