Navy Secretary Carlos Del Toro announced Wednesday that Undersecretary of the Navy Erik Raven will step down in August.

Raven, who assumed the Navy’s second-highest civilian position in April 2022, will have served just over two years when he steps down. As undersecretary, he served as the Navy’s chief operating officer and chief operating officer. Before becoming undersecretary, Raven served as the majority clerk on the Senate Appropriations Defense Subcommittee, USNI News previously reported.

During the swearing-in ceremony, Del Toro touted his congressional experience, saying it would help Raven navigate the position.

“Erik Raven has been a true leader in advancing the Department of the Navy’s highest priorities,” Del Toro said in a statement Wednesday. “He has demonstrated an unwavering commitment to protecting our Nation, strengthening our Navy and Marine Corps Team, and building lasting advantages in the fight. His experience has ensured that our naval forces are equipped to deter and, if necessary, decisively win in war, while ensuring the well-being of our service members, civilians, and their families.”

Del Toro highlighted Raven’s contributions to the AUKUS trilateral security partnership, his work improving infrastructure on Guam and his effectiveness in streamlining Navy business operations. Raven’s role also included testifying before Congress on Navy capabilities and budget.

“We have benefited from Erik’s wise counsel and loyal service to the Department and our Nation,” Del Toro said in a statement. “Our national security, Navy and Marine Corps are stronger because of his service. We wish him all the best in his future endeavors.”

As USNI News previously reported, Raven was the first person confirmed to serve as secretary in the Biden administration.
