Mulligan Ave. Dedication Honors ‘Topper’, Police Officer Who Also Worked at Taft HS – Nadig Newspapers

by BRIAN NADIG

Councilman Nicholas Sposato (38th) last month organized an honorary street dedication in the 4500 block of North Mulligan Avenue in memory of Ronald C. “Topper” Topczewski, former president emeritus of the Polish American Police Association.

Mr. Topczewski, an Army veteran who died at age 84 in 2023, worked as a Chicago police officer for 32 years and then as a security guard at Taft High School for about 20 years.

He attended Holy Trinity Elementary School and then Holy Trinity High School, where he played basketball and other sports.

“Ronald never missed an opportunity to play in organized basketball in the leagues in the city or in the department. Ronald was old-fashioned, because he played handball for 30 years, every Tuesday and Friday, and in two or three basketball games a week.

“He also always found time to coach (his sons) Bryan and Charlie’s basketball teams at Saint Roberts and Norwood Park,” his biography on the Skaja Funeral Home website reads.

A road sign reading “Ronald ‘Topper’ Topczewski honorary way” hangs at the intersection of Mulligan and Sunnyside streets in the Dunham Park neighborhood.
