Burlington Man Arrested After Police Chase in Cedar Rapids

Antonio McLaurin

CEDAR RAPIDS — A Burlington man was arrested Tuesday after a pursuit that ended when the driver crashed into a water-filled ditch and fled the wreckage.

Cedar Rapids police found Antonio McLaurin, 38, on Interstate 380 between Tower Terrace Road and County Home Road at about 5:30 a.m.

He was arrested and charged with providing false information. He also has multiple outstanding warrants in other jurisdictions, according to a news release from Cedar Rapids police.

According to the criminal complaint, McLaurin repeatedly identified himself to police as Earl Nowell III. He was identified through his driver’s license photo and tattoos on his arms, police said.

The news release said that Tuesday morning, officers spotted a car speeding near the 1800 block of Johnson Avenue NW.

The car evaded officers but was spotted again near First Avenue and L Street NW. It continued to elude police, traveling north on I-380 until it entered a water-filled ditch near County Home Road, the release said.

The owner or owners of the vehicle fled the wreckage, and Cedar Rapids police searched the area with assistance from other law enforcement agencies.

The press release and criminal complaint did not say whether police believe McLaurin was driving the vehicle or how many people may have been inside it.
