A chilling case has emerged from Fayetteville, North Carolina, where 63-year-old Avantae Deven has been charged with murdering her two adopted children, Blake and London Deven. The disturbing details came to light during a press conference organized by Fayetteville Police Chief Kemberle Braden on Wednesday.

Isolated and hungry

It was awful. There were days when we didn’t go to the shower. The only time we could turn on the bathroom or sink was to get water… If we weren’t locked in the bathroom, we had to use buckets as a toilet. There were a lot of beatings because we stole food to survive.

Consequences and allegations

In court Thursday, Deven faced a list of serious charges that include two counts of first-degree murder, two counts of concealing a death, kidnapping in connection with London’s death and felony child abuse in connection with Blake. She remains held without bail in the Cumberland County Jail.
