Netflix Co-Founder Says Joe Biden Must Resign

Netflix co-founder and executive chairman Reed Hastings has joined a growing number of Democrats publicly calling for Joe Biden to step down as the party’s 2024 presidential nominee. Biden is running for re-election, but his disastrous performance in the first presidential debate with Donald Trump has prompted many Democrats to urge him to step down, as many believe it is the only way the party can defeat Trump.

“Biden must step down to allow a vibrant Democratic leader to defeat Trump and keep us safe and prosperous,” Hastings said in an email to The New York Times.

Diversity reached out to Netflix for additional comment.

Hastings and his wife, Patty Quillin, have long been among the Democratic Party’s biggest donors, according to The Times. The couple has given more than $20 million to the party in recent years, including a whopping $1.5 million to Biden’s campaign against Trump in 2020. They each gave $100,000 last summer to support Biden’s 2024 campaign.

Biden’s poor showing in the first split presidential race of 2024, with Democrats seemingly split. “The View” co-host Sara Haines announced the morning after the debate that Biden must get out of the way if Democrats are to block Trump from becoming president again.

“I think President Biden needs to step down and be replaced,” Haines told her co-hosts on air. “If we want to defeat Donald Trump in November, I absolutely think that … they need to move quickly, and I would implore those closest to the president to have the very difficult conversations that they’re going to have to have, and not just because of the political ramifications, but for humanity, his integrity, and his legacy. That’s all on the line right now.”

Haines’ “The View” co-host Alyssa Farah Griffin agreed, saying, “Donald Trump is a threat to our democracy. We need someone who can defeat him… (Joe) needs to put the country before his own ambitions and needs to step down and pass the baton. Mark my words, if it’s Trump versus Biden, it’s going to be Trump.”

While there were reports that Biden was considering withdrawing from the Democratic nomination race due to negative feedback about his debate performance, White House press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre assured the press that this was not true.

“Absolutely not,” Jean-Pierre said. “And you heard that, I think, directly from the campaign as well.”
