Man arrested in car theft from murdered elderly couple – NBC 6 South Florida

Police have arrested a man they say stole the car of an elderly couple found murdered in their Fort Lauderdale home earlier this year.

According to Fort Lauderdale police, 30-year-old Maurice Newson was arrested in May and charged with stealing Major and Claudette Melvin’s vehicle.

The husband and wife, ages 89 and 85, were found shot to death in their home in the 600 block of Southwest 30th Terrace on March 22.

Their vehicle — a red 2014 Ford Fusion — was missing.

During the investigation, detectives eventually found the vehicle in a tow lot.

Detectives later discovered that Newson had not only stolen the car, but also sold it.

NBC6 has learned that Newson was in a romantic relationship with the couple’s granddaughter.

Newson was charged with motor vehicle theft and dealing in stolen property but has not been linked to the murders.
