Man (33) arrested for assaulting police officer in Derry

The man was arrested

A 33-year-old man has been arrested after assaulting two police officers during an incident in Derry city on Wednesday.

It happened shortly after 2pm when police received reports of a man shouting obscenities in Foyle Street in the presence of children.

When a member of the public addressed the man, he left the area.

Police later found him and arrested him on suspicion of disorderly conduct. As officers led him to their vehicle, the man attacked two officers, kicking them and trying to escape.

He was arrested and detained on suspicion of assaulting police and resisting police. He was also arrested for possession of a controlled drug of class B. He remains in custody while enquiries are ongoing.

Det Sgt Devlin, of Derry City and Strabane Police, said: “This was an unpleasant incident which occurred in the presence of young people and must have been distressing for them.

“It was also an ugly incident in which two of our officers were attacked. Fortunately, they were able to continue their duties despite what happened to them, but this incident serves as a reminder of the challenges and dangers our colleagues face in working to keep people safe.

“Attacks on our officers are unacceptable.”
