Safety concerns have closed the A550 Tinkersdale road for resurfacing

The A550 Tinkersdale is closed between Dobshill Roundabout and Glynne Way due to significant road surface damage, raising safety concerns.

Flintshire County Council has declared the road unsafe for all users and requires complete resurfacing.

The decision to close the road is based on the assessment of council officers who found that the condition of the road had deteriorated significantly between scheduled safety checks.

The council said the section of the A550 had a history of subsidence and that recent evidence suggested the subgrade was still moving.

Combined with unusually wet conditions last winter and spring, these factors accelerated the road’s degradation.

“During the winter and spring of 2024, there was heavy and prolonged rainfall across the county, which, combined with the lush vegetation, prevented the road surface from drying out,” a council spokesman said. “The wet conditions have deteriorated the surface, making the road no longer suitable for simple patching.”

Work on the road began today. Contractors will focus on repaving the worst sections and carrying out additional maintenance work while the road remains closed. The work is expected to be completed within the next three weeks.

A Flintshire Council spokesman said: “Affected traffic is being diverted via the A550(T), A5104 (Broughton) and B5125. Key stakeholders such as the emergency services and transport operators, as well as internal teams such as waste/recycling collection teams, have been notified and we will continue to work with these stakeholders to ensure this essential work has minimal impact on their operations.
