Cleveland cop slain, McQuaid graduate, son of former Greece police officer who was victim of West Webster tragedy

CLEVELAND, OHIO – The police officer who was killed on the job on July 4 was raised in Webster and graduated from McQuaid Jesuit School.

Jamieson Ritter was a four-year veteran of the force. He is the son of retired Greece police officer Jon Ritter. The elder Ritter is credited with saving lives on Christmas Eve 2012 when William Spengler set a fire and shot firefighters on Lake Road. Ritter was driving to work and used his car to prevent others from stumbling upon the shooting.

On Thursday morning, the younger Ritter was responding to a call to the neighborhood about a man wanted for assault who police say opened fire. He was the only officer shot.

Ritter served in the Ohio Army National Guard after graduating from Syracuse University in 2019. He spent time serving in Syria.

“From an early age, Jamieson demonstrated an innate need for selfless service to his nation and a strong desire to serve his community.”

“Today is a sad day for our city,” said Chief Todd. “Ironically, on this day of freedom, we are reminded of the evil that seeks to impose itself upon our community. However, despite our pain and suffering, we acknowledge the tremendous sacrifice that Officer Ritter made and will honor his memory and compassion.

We will continue to carry his legacy in our hearts.”
