Harry S. Truman High School seniors Alicia Mohli and Giovanni Nigro will continue their studies as Tigers at Princeton University in the fall. They both thank their teachers, advisors, friends, family and loved ones for supporting them on their journey as Tigers becoming Tigers.

Alicia Mohla’s Path to Princeton

For years, Princeton has been Alicia Mohla’s dream school.

“It’s close, it’s got a nice campus, and it really focuses on the undergraduate experience, which is incredibly important to me,” she said. “Plus, Princeton has one of the most generous financial aid programs in the country. I knew Princeton was the right choice for me because of the environment and its values.”

Although Princeton students don’t declare their majors until their sophomore year, Mohli plans to major in molecular biology as part of a pre-med track. She’s working toward a medical career, with the goal of becoming a physician after completing her undergraduate and graduate degrees.

“Truman offered a range of challenging classes, extracurricular activities and opportunities that made my application to Princeton exceptional,” Mohli said.

In addition to taking AP classes, Mohli was the vice president of the National Honors Society, a student ambassador for the Student Advisory Board, a founder of the school newspaper, and a member of the Key Club and VOICE club. Outside of school, she often volunteered locally, helping with art and soccer activities for children. Mohli encourages anyone interested in attending an Ivy League school to challenge themselves with AP classes and get involved in clubs and sports.

“I’m very excited about the high-quality education I’ll receive at Princeton, as well as the social aspect,” Mohli said. “I love meeting new people and I can’t wait to do that at Princeton!”

Art Program Brings Giovanni Nigro to Princeton

Before Giovanni Nigro chose Princeton, he wondered whether it would be home to the Tigers or the Quakers at the University of Pennsylvania.

He admits he couldn’t have made a mistake with either decision, but says, “The turning point came when Princeton sent me a brochure about its arts programs, and I knew Princeton was the place for me. And there have been so many wonderful writers and artists who have come out of Princeton, which I hope to be a part of next time.”

Nigro plans to study humanities and music as a minor, and pursue certificates in the meantime.

“My goal is to become a music lawyer and/or a playwright. Being a musician was also a strong thought. The latter two are really my dream jobs, but my end goal is to accomplish enough to become a lawyer,” he said.

Nigro is excited that he will find more people at college who want to create like he does.

“You don’t often hear about contemporary playwrights and composers, but I want to bring back underground art that challenges what we perceive as a society,” he said. “Princeton is also known for activism, so art with a purpose is definitely on my list.”

While at Truman, Nigro was very involved in Truman Drama, serving as vice president of his class, was a member of the Speech and Debate Team, and participated in every music program in high school. He credits his experiences and teachers with showing him the intensity of college work, which pushed him to work harder.

“I am proud to be a Truman student. Our district is fierce and omnipresent, like our mascot, the tiger, giving back to our community,” Nigro said. “I am excited to tell the people of Princeton that I am from Truman.”
