Yankees OF Trent Grisham booed for playing effortlessly, slump continues as Aaron Judge’s personal trainer slams team

The New York Yankees’ slide after a dream start to the season reached a new low Thursday, thanks to the Cincinnati Reds. And Trent Grisham.

The bad times were well underway in the ninth inning, with the Reds leading 8-4 and on the verge of becoming the first team to sweep the Yankees in a three-game series this season. Grisham then became an easy target for fans frustrated with New York’s problems.

With two outs, the Reds third baseman hit a ball to center field to Grisham, who casually held his glove and tossed the bouncing ball. Candelario, still rounding first base, saw the toss and sprinted to second base for a double. Boos quickly followed Grisham’s effortless play.

The bright side is that Grisham has made a number of costly mistakes when playing ground balls in the outfield, something the current Yankees right fielder is all too aware of.

The error proved harmless, as Spencer Steer was thrown out on the next at-bat, ending the inning. Unfortunately, the Yankees failed to recover in the bottom of the ninth, ending the sweep for the Reds.

A bigger problem for the Yankees were the three home runs by starting pitcher Marcus Stroman, who allowed five runs in five innings of play.

With the victory, the Yankees have lost 13 of their last 17 games, during which time they have gone from 2.5 games behind the Baltimore Orioles for first place in the AL East to 2.0 games behind. Six of those losses have come by six or more points.

That slide came despite the Yankees hiring the world’s most unstoppable prospect, Aaron Judge, even though he was 0-for-4 with two strikeouts Thursday. Richard Schenck, the former MVP’s personal batting coach, had something to say about the matter when the numbers were discussed on the YES Network.

It’s been a bad time for the Yankees overall. Their next chance to improve will be a home series against the Boston Red Sox starting Friday, and a pre-All-Star break road trip against the Orioles is starting to loom large.
