Ohio police officer shot and killed while executing warrant

CLEVELAND, Ohio — A 27-year-old Cleveland police officer was killed early Thursday morning after he was shot in the Hough neighborhood, Cleveland police said.

WKYC Channel 3 reports the shooting occurred near the intersection of East 79th Street and Wade Park Avenue.

At a news conference, police said the 24-year-old suspect was in custody and being transported to the Cuyahoga County Jail. He was not injured.

Police said eight to 10 officers were at the scene, executing an arrest warrant for assault.

“Our men and women are out there every day,” police said. “They work hard. They risk their lives. They risk everything they have to protect their community.”

Police have not yet released the officer’s name or details about his past.

“I am heartbroken by the devastating loss of one of our Cleveland Division of Police officers today,” Mayor Justin Bibb said in a prepared statement. “Our entire city is mourning the tragic loss of this dedicated public servant.”

We will provide full support to the investigation and ensure that the perpetrator is quickly brought to justice to the fullest extent of the law.

Jacob Derbin, 23, was shot and killed while responding to a domestic violence call on May 11. He and other officers were responding to a home on East 211th Street after a woman reported that the father of her child was threatening her and her mother just before 10 p.m. She reported to officers that the suspect had fled before they arrived. When officers went to check the yard, they were “ambushed by gunfire,” Euclid Police Chief Scott Meyer said cleveland.com and The Plain Dealer. Derbin died later in the hospital. No other officers were injured.

The shooter, 24-year-old Deshawn Anthony Vaughn, was found dead the next day after a confrontation with police at an apartment building in Shaker Heights.
