UPDATE: GBI identifies inmate found dead in Bulloch County Jail

The Bulloch County Sheriff’s Office has asked the Georgia Bureau of Investigation to investigate the death of an inmate that occurred Thursday morning at the Bulloch County Jail.

According to a Sheriff’s Office release, jail staff members called 911 at 6:32 a.m. after an inmate was found unconscious. The inmate was confirmed dead at that time.

In a separate release, the GBI identified the deceased as 68-year-old Robert Linwood Chavers of Statesboro.

“On Thursday, May 2, 2024, at approximately 7:20 a.m., the GBI was requested by the Bulloch County Sheriff’s Office to contact him regarding an unconscious inmate,” the GBI release stated. “Jail staff discovered Chavers unconscious in his cell at approximately 6:30 a.m. Life-saving efforts were unsuccessful, and Chavers was pronounced dead at the jail.”

The GBI will be the lead investigating agency in determining the cause of death.
